David Ferguson has been named captain of Gateshead FC for the 2026/27 season, taking on the armband permanently after deputising temporarily last season.
The 32-year-old made 45 appearances across all competitions in his debut campaign at the club. He began the season at left back before moving to a central role in a back three and re-establishing himself in the starting 11.
Ferguson has captained two other clubs previously — Blackpool and Hartlepool United — making this his third captaincy appointment.
Vice-captain and support
Josh Home will serve as vice-captain for 2026/27 as he enters his second full season as a Gateshead player. Home made 46 appearances across all competitions during the 2025/26 campaign, playing in midfield.
Manager's backing
Manager Lee Cattermole praised the appointment. "Fergie is the stand-out captain, and I'm really looking forward to him leading the team out," Cattermole said. "His career warrants it. He's got the respect of the dressing room and he's got the respect of the staff."
Cattermole added: "We've got more leaders in the group – I can hear the way they're speaking to each other in training and the messages are good. I like the way the squad sounds day to day on the pitch, and Fergie is going to play a big part in that."
