More than 200 tonnes of debris has been cleared from Askew Road in Gateshead after a large water pipe burst on Sunday, flooding the road as thousands of people travelled to the Great North Run.
Northumbrian Water confirmed there was a "heavy burst on a water main" on the grass bank beside Askew Road. The burst sent mud, rocks and water cascading down to the roundabout under the southern approach to the A189 Redheugh Bridge.
The flooding occurred near Redheugh Bridge just as race day traffic was building, with people heading to the annual half-marathon that crosses the Tyne Bridge. The roundabout became submerged under water from the burst main.
Road reopened with restrictions
Askew Road reopened on Monday evening following the clean-up operation. However, a partial lane closure remains in place on the south side of the roundabout.
Gateshead Council said further repairs would continue over the next few days.
