Residents living across the River Tyne from Gateshead International Stadium have objected to a house music event planned for 30 and 31 October.
The event will feature local DJ Ben Hemsley performing to around 6,000 people over both days. Organiser Lab3events Ltd has applied for an entertainment and alcohol licence from Gateshead Council.
Noise concerns from previous events
Objections centre on noise from previous gigs held at the stadium in September. A resident of St Peter's Basin, which sits opposite the stadium, said they had to "endure two days of incessant noise" during the Accelerate Festival on 25 and 26 September.
"I have already complained over that event as to how often the noise level was checked, as the decibel level was so high I had to close all my windows and doors," the resident said.
Newcastle City Councillor for Byker ward Nick Hartley reported being directly affected by noise from the September events. "Music was clearly audible from my home for significant periods of the event, continuing until 23:00, the noise was intrusive," he said. "This was not an isolated experience. I was contacted by numerous residents in St Peter's Basin and the wider Byker area reporting similar disturbance."
Organiser's response
Lab3events Ltd said this would be the third event it has held at the stadium. In response to objections, Licence Leader Ltd — acting on behalf of the applicant — stated the September events were operated with a "comprehensive system of sound monitoring and regulation" fully compliant with guidelines and requirements.
Gateshead Council's licensing sub-committee will decide on the application on Thursday.
