Gateshead FC have signed 23-year-old Michael Spellman on a contract until 2027. The North-East native joins from Newport County, where he spent the past two seasons in EFL League Two.

Spellman made 72 appearances across all competitions for Newport, scoring seven goals in the Football League. Last season he scored five goals in League Two for The Exiles and was named Newport's Fans' Player of the Season for the 2025/26 campaign.

Path to the Football League

Spellman came through Sunderland's academy system after being scouted while playing for Chester-le-Street United in the Wearside League. Before joining Newport, he gained senior experience on loan with Blyth Spartans and Whitby Town.

Ready to Make an Impact

"I can't wait to get started – there's no better feeling than being at home in the North East," Spellman said.

"First and foremost, I want to bring goals, I want to bring assists and I do want to excite the fans and get them off their seat. I'm delighted to be here, and I can't wait to get started and meet the fans."

Spellman reflected on his time at Newport, saying: "It was a big decision for me, but it was something I needed at the time and I'm so glad I did that because it helped me become the player I am today. I'm a lot more confident, I believe in myself a lot more, and I just want to play football and score goals."

Gateshead face Woking in their first home fixture of the season on Saturday, August 15th.
